Exploring the Sensorium 

An Architectural Journey Through Molecular Gastronomy 

Molecular gastronomy pushes the boundaries of conventional food production and consumption, transforming the physical and chemical properties of ingredients to reveal a new dimension of sensory, social, and aesthetic experiences. My thesis project aims to create an architectural parallel to this progressive movement in gastronomic culture, re-establishing the relationship between food production and consumption in the gastronomic complex.

Re-establishing the Spatio-Temporal Relationship:

The project seeks to re-establish the relationship between production and consumption, using architecture as a mediator between food and the territory. Rather than a synthetic whole, architecture exists as fragments of intense moments, which the individual weaves together through constructing their own menu-itineraries. The resulting experience is unique, shaped by the individual’s investigation and creation of new relationships between food, architecture, and territory.

Redefining the Role of the Senses in Architecture:

This project aims to expand the sensory values associated with food, challenging the architecture’s ability to produce sensation. By heightening sensory awareness through the synesthetic composition of the senses, the project reveals the abundance of sensory experiences. The goal is to create a meaningful sensory dialogue between food and architecture, enriching the overall experience.

The Ultimate Sensorium:

Beyond celebrating food through architecture, this project uses the potential of food as an architectural device, capturing its essence to create the ultimate sensorium. The result is a new understanding of the relationship between food and architecture, one that goes beyond conventional notions of production and consumption.”

Redefining the Role of the Senses in Architecture:

This project seeks to expand our understanding of the senses and their role in architecture by creating a synesthetic map. This map combines fragments of different senses to cultivate knowledge, promote awareness of origin and context, and deepen the sensory experience. The goal is to enrich the architectural experience through meaningful sensory dialogue.

01_대지형태와 주변 도로

대상지는 각기 다른 특색을 지닌 길이 흘러들고 뻗어나가는 역동적인 장소이다. 경마 경로당이 위치한 세모꼴 대지는 왕십리로5길 및 활성화 가로의 사이에 위치해 있으며, 두 길은 대지의 북단에서 합쳐져서 성수동 갈비골목으로 이어진다. 또한 주요도로인 왕십리로에서도 조망가능하며 접근이 용이한 곳에 있다.

02_경마 경로당

지난 30년간 지역주민간 소통의 장으로 기능해온 경마 경로당은 개인의 시간과 공동체의 역사가 만나고 섞이는 장소였다. 빠르게 변해버린 주변의 풍경과 대조를 이루며 쌓여온 시간의 켜를 담아내는 건물이다.
